Route 202 in Windham was the site of yet another motorcycle crash earlier this month, which nearly claimed the life of the operator. Police say that witnesses on the scene helped the severely injured biker, who was quickly transported to Maine Medical Center. Officials say that the accident happened when the driver of a vehicle crossed over Route 202’s center lane, hitting the victim who was driving in the opposite direction.
The accident is still under investigation, but early reports raise suspicion that the driver’s actions may have been caused by fatigue.
As Maine motorcycle accident lawyers at Hardy, Wolf & Downing know all too well, victims of such crashes are often subject to life-threatening harm, given their relative lack of protection. Even motorcyclists who wear helmets and protective clothing are vulnerable to suffering broken bones, traumatic brain injury (TBI) and spinal cord damage when hit by a vehicle or truck.
Illegal turns, driver inattention , fatigue and improper lane changes are some of the most common causes of motorcycle accidents in Maine. If you or a loved one incurred injuries in a motor vehicle crash, our experienced attorneys will investigate all liable parties, and take legal action when warranted.
Motorcyclists injured in Freeport and Naples
On July 12, the Portland Press Herald reported on a separate motorcycle accident that occurred on Freeport’s Flying Point Road. Eyewitness Sarah Woodward said the man was traveling from the Brunswick area toward downtown Freeport when the crash occurred. Woodward went outside her house to investigate the scene after hearing a very loud crash and found the operator prone on the ground, moaning in pain. The name of the victim was not released, but reports say that he was wearing a helmet at the time and apparently hit a mailbox and then fell into a ditch.
It is unknown if there were other vehicles involved in the incident, or if the motorcyclist was dealing with a malfunction or defective piece of equipment.Woodward called 911 and emergency crews got the victim aboard a LifeFlight helicopter for immediate transport to Maine Medical Center.
On a more tragic note, Naples residents are mourning the loss of Daveen Bell, a 47-year-old former bus driver who died less than two weeks after suffering serious head trauma in a motorcycle crash. Daveen’s husband was driving the couple on their Harley Davidson near Pike’s Corner Oasis on July 2, when the accident occurred. Police Lt. Joseph Sage says that couple was following a truck and attempted to pass the vehicle on the right as the driver made a right turn.
Daveen was well-loved by her family, friends and community and is remembered for her big heart and infectious smile. She drove the school bus for kindergarten through grade 12 in the Naples area and will be sadly missed by all, said Andrew Madura, director of transportation for the school district.
